The major highlight of famous events that took place in Africa this year will be the soccer world cup that took place over the summer in South Africa, which was the first time the world cup had been hosted by an African country. Another famous competition which visited Africa for the first time this year is the World Series of Poker competition that is ongoing at the moment. The WSOP tournament comes off at the Johannesburg-based Emerald Resort and Casino.

There will be two main competitions going on i.e. the PLO tournament worth $1,100 which took off on Monday and the NHLE event that took off on Thursday October 28 with $5,000 as the prize money for its winner. Another tournament was held on Thursday to support charity and was sponsored by Gus Hansen who was a participant in the NHLE event. Participants of the charity event were required to purchase $287 dollar tickets and those who increased their stakes to $502 were seated at the same table as Hansen.

Winners of the competition will have Circuit Series competition Gold Rings as awards even though the tournament is authorized by WSOP. No one will also be handed POY points from the WSOP Circuit Series.

Many more African countries will be benefitting from poker tournaments should everything work out well in Johannesburg. Many of such tournaments have been held in Marrakech, Morocco since 2008.
